Hello all!

I have a Seiko G757-4000 watch that i’ve had since 1985. The battery died way back in 1989 or so, and i’ve had it in a box ever since. I stumbled across it over the weekend and realized how much I loved it. I purchased a battery, but after i installed it, the time displayed is very faint, plus i have to view it on an angle to see it. I started doing some research on the watch and found this website (which is awesome by the way) and saw the picture of a FANTASTIC G757-4000. Now i really want to get mine fixed! So my questions are this:

1. Can my watch be repaired or is it simply too old?
2. If it can be repaired, can anyone suggest the appropriate repair shop (Seiko, independent)?
3. Any other suggestions anyone would like to offer is greatly appreciated!

Thanks to everyone who left a message for me both publicly and privately! It sounds like it’s possible to be fixed, so I’m going to figure out the best method to do so.

One question though… Should i avoid having Seiko try to repair it? I have noticed that none of the answers I received mentioned the manufacturer. Any thoughts?

If you contact Seiko (I’ve done it once) they will reply: “Sorry! We cannot repair your vintage watch. It is simply too old…” I asked a watchmaker than. He told me it was possible to cut the zebra contacts or polish them. I paid a lot for the service - 100 Euro or so. You can buy a G757 from ebay for 170-220 Euro. No result. So, I had to develop my own method. I started using it with almost every problematic watch. The current result is 8 of 10. The outcome in case of G757 - 4 of 5. That means I’ve repaired 4 watches and only one of them stays in a poor condition: better than before but still not good enough to wear it. So, it should be your decision. Some other people have tried my method out with quite satisfactory results. In other words, if I have your watch on my desk now, it will be operational in 30-40 minutes due to my experience with this particular movement. In your case, if you use the method correctly and in case you are careful with small parts inside - your chances to repair the watch are quite high.

Out of curiosity I called the Seiko repair center, named COSERV, to inquire about repairing my watch. The woman I spoke to looked up my watch model and said they repaired one last year and suggested i send it in to see what they could do.

I’m in Philadelphia, and the repair center is only about two hours away in New Jersey, so i figure I have nothing to lose by dropping it off to have them evaluate it. It’s a free evaluation, so i’ll see what they say.

More than anything, I’m hoping that they can fix the crystal since it’s cracked. Then i’ll take care of the movement next.

So how did i get my G757-4000? Well, back in 1985, my dad got one as a gift from my uncle (who also had one). I though it was the coolest watch EVER and begged for him to get one for me. So, for my birthday in 1986, my dad gave me one. But here’s the funny part - i turned 11 years old in 1986! I remember wearing it well into the early 90’s (maybe 1991), so when i stumbled upon it a few weeks ago it brought back some great memories. Last weekend, I asked my uncle if he still had his G757. Here’s what he said, “Oh, i used to have CASES of those watches. I used to give them out to people who took a tour of the timeshare condo’s i was selling”.

WHAT?!?! Cases!?!?  We searched his garage but didn’t find any. I was kinda bummed out, but at least i know there’s hope for my watch.

I’ll keep everyone posted with my repair status and what Seiko has to say - thanks for all the great info everyone!

The G757 is a real pain but as you have some life a clean of the contacts on the board may give you the juice to the screen you need. Also make sure the battery you used is a good quality one.
