Hi all!
I have a Seiko A259-5010 that is plagued by a hard-to-diagnose problem. When I got the watch it was in a rather bad condition internally. Greasy sticky green goo everywhere probably from a long forgotten battery. It did work however, given a fresh battery. But after a day or two the display grew dimmer and dimmer, seemingly coinciding with wearing the watch. Sometimes I was able to get it back by tapping the watch or gently pressing the case. At times the display started flashing which seems to be a “low battery” indicator. I have since taken the watch apart and cleaned it thoroughly thinking there was a bad connection somewhere, but the problem persists. I should mention two things: The current consumption is well above the normal 2.5 ?A stated in the service manual, I measured around 10-14 ?A depending on meter used. Also the LCD has what I think is referred to as a “bleeding edge”, i.e. a black border around the edge of the display.
Apart from cleaning and visually inspecting the watch I don’t really know what to do. I guess the current consumption could be either a cause or an effect. The fact that the watch responds to gentle pressing and probing seems to indicate some kind of bad connection, but could a bad connection cause excessive current consumption? Apart from the sometimes dim display all the functions work. Does anyone have a clue?
