The Cox Electronic Systems, Inc. Quarza Digital Watch was one of the first developed after the Hamilton push button LED. Essentially, it was the first practical LCD digital because the display was easy to read in low light levels. It incorporated the first Field Effect LCD developed by Ilixco (International Liquid Crystal Company of Cleveland Ohio.) It started selling in 1972. At the time, the company was known for making the first digital timers for organized sports. They precisely measured event times to 1/1000 second accuracy, and were used in over 100 sanctioned track & field, ski. and drag racing events in the very first year they were sold, including the 1972 U.S. and Canadian Olympic trials, WAC, FINA, IORRA, AAU. NCAA, FIS, USSA, ISA, and were selected for use in the World University Games held in Moscow Russia (Soviet Union).
